Capt. Froberg Relieves Capt. Yargosz as Commanding Officer of Naval Station Great Lakes

Capt. Kenneth Froberg relieved Capt. Stephen M. Yargosz as commanding officer of Naval Station Great Lakes (NSGL) during a change of command ceremony held at the USS Whitehat. Rear Adm. Brad Rosen, prospective commander of Navy Region Mid-Atlantic, presided over the ceremony, Oct. 8, 2026.

Following the transfer of command, a retirement ceremony honored Yargosz for 27 years of dedicated active-duty naval service.

Reflecting on his tenure leading the Navy’s premier training installation, Yargosz emphasized that the heart of the base lies in its personnel and strong regional ties.

"An installation is essentially just a bunch of buildings, roads, fences, and gates. What truly makes it special is the team that makes everything happen," said Yargosz. "They are what make Naval Station Great Lakes so special and the best base in the Navy."

Yargosz also expressed gratitude to civic and community leaders across northern Illinois for their continued collaboration with the military.

"Installations do not exist in a void and receive a lot of support from our partners in the federal, state, and local governments and the local communities," Yargosz said. "Thank you to all of you for making us feel like we are one community and a family."

Froberg praised his predecessor's leadership and camaraderie over their shared time at Great Lakes while looking ahead to the installation's future.

"I have had the honor to serve with Capt. Steve 'TF' Yargosz over the past three years and am humbled to carry the baton of your service forth with this fine crew that are the men and women of Naval Station Great Lakes," Froberg said. "TF, we have traveled a great deal of challenges together over the past several years, something only a fellow commanding officer can understand — the Charge of Command."

Addressing the military and civilian staff, Froberg challenged the team to continue striving for operational excellence across all facets of base support.

"I ask that each of you reaffirm our commitment to serving as the fleet role model for providing world-class installation quality of service in a safe, secure, and professional manner, where we will obsess together about our team and customer quality experience," said Froberg. "Shipmates, we have work to do."

A native of North Webster, Indiana, and a 1998 Purdue University graduate, Yargosz accumulated more than 2,500 flight hours over a distinguished career that included combat deployments in support of Operation Enduring Freedom and Iraqi operations, command of Helicopter Sea Combat Squadron (HSC) 9, and duty as a White House policy analyst. He took command of NSGL in October 2023.

Froberg, a Rhode Island native and 1998 graduate of the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy, assumed command following a three-year tour as commanding officer of Recruit Training Command. An accomplished E-2 Hawkeye naval aviator, his career spans multiple carrier air wing deployments, command of Training Squadron Ten “Wildcats”, and duty as the U.S. Navy liaison to the Royal Navy.

NSGL covers more than 1,600 acres along Lake Michigan, supporting Recruit Training Command—the Navy’s only boot camp—alongside multiple advanced surface warfare and technical training commands.
